The people are emphasized because they are the brightest part of the image. The image is almost symmetrical, but there are enough differences to make it interesting.
2. This is a good example of rule of space. It also has a good range of values, and again the subject is the brightest. The subject's position combined with the shadow creates movement across the entire image.
